Endocrinology (Hormone Disorder)
Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system in the human body. This is a system of glands which secretes hormones. Hormones are chemicals which affect the actions of different organ systems in the body. Examples include thyroid hormone, growth hormone and insulin. The endocrine system involves a number of feedback mechanisms, so that often one hormone (such as thyroid stimulating hormone) will control the action of release of another secondary hormone (such as thyroid hormone). If there is too much of the secondary hormone, it may provide negative feedback to the primary hormone, maintaining homeostasis.
Patients with diabetes, thyroid problems, adrenal disorder, hypothalamus, thymus, weight and metabolism, osteoporosis and bone health, men’s health (infertility, testosterone levels) or women’s health (menopause, infertility, some menstrual problems) are suggested to see an endocrinologist. Endocrinologists treat people who suffer from hormonal imbalances, typically from glands in the endocrine system or certain types of cancers. The overall goal of treatment is to restore the normal balance of hormones found in a patient’s body.
At Timberland Medical Centre, our endocrinologists deal with hormonal problems that affect teenagers and adults. Their main role is to diagnose the hormonal problems and advise on the best treatment options; either medically or surgically.
They are also specially trained to handle patients with poorly controlled diabetes, especially those with long standing diabetes and with diabetic complications.
